Disorders Treated by LASIK

Nearsightedness

With Nearsightedness or Myopia, rays of light are not focused on the BACK of the eye falling in FRONT of its focusing point on the Retina thus causing Blurriness for distance vision. We correct Myopia  by forcing or “pushing” the focus point back properly on the Retina to achieve clear vision. This is often done with visual aides such as glasses & contact lenses. With LASIK, the focus point is forced BACK onto the Retina allowing proper focusing of the eye WITHOUT visual aides & resulting in CLEAR Vision WITHOUT any visual aides! This is accomplished with LASIK by FLATTENING the curvature of the cornea with the laser beam.

Farsightedness

With Farsightedness or Hyperopia, rays of light are not focused on the BACK of the eye falling BEHIND its focusing point on the Retina thus causing Blurriness for distance vision as well the near vision which tends to be more worse. We correct hyperopia  by forcing or “pulling” the focus point back properly on the Retina to achieve clear vision. This is often done with visual aides such as glasses & contact lenses. With LASIK, the focus point is forced BACK onto the Retina allowing proper focusing of the eye WITHOUT visual aides & resulting in CLEAR Vision WITHOUT any visual aides! This is accomplished with LASIK by STEEPENING the curvature of the cornea with the laser beam.

Astigmatism

With Astigmatism, rays of light are not focused on the BACK of the eye due to the cornea being “OVAL” in shape like a Football with its focusing point on the Retina thus causing Blurriness for distance vision at ALL RANGES of vision from Distance to Near. Also severe astigmatism can cause double vision with reading as well as glare at night with lights while driving & other activities. We correct     Astsigmatism often with visual aides such as glasses & contact lenses. With LASIK, the corneal curvature is made more ” ROUND” like a Baseball to focus rays of light onto the Retina allowing proper focusing of the eye resulting in CLEAR Vision WITHOUT any visual aides!

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a visual disorder occuring in the early 40’s years of life where one lose the ability to see clearly up close and push things away to see clearer and when no longer to see that range eventually get reading glasses to restore clear vision for reading.  The reason for presbyopia is the onset of an aging problem where one loses the ability to “accomodate” or change the shape of the internal lens to focus clearly for near vision. This loss of combination is thought to be due to the hardening of the lens or the dysfunctionof the ciliary eye muscles not working well to change the cornea to a thicker shape to focus clearly for near vision. One usually uses a magnifier lens full time and the prescription number increses from a +1.5o to a +3.00 prescription as We get older in age. With LASIK laser vision correction, although there is no reading surgery with LASIK, a MONOVISION correction can be performed. Many people already have Monovision with the usage of contact lenses to see clearly BOTH far & near without the usage of contact lenses! With Monovion LASIK, The DOMINANT eye is done for distance & the NON-DOMINANT eye is done for near vision. The monovision results are usually EXCELLENT with one having the BEST of BOTH WORLDS to see CLEARLY Both far & near WITHOUT the need for reading glasses ANYMORE!
